The members of our club worked for in emergency communications like Tsunami, Orissa Super Cyclone, ‘Aila’ Cyclone, Gujarat Earthquake, ‘Sidr’ cyclone, Uttarakhand floods etc.

Our Club members have also extended their support services to West Bengal State Election Commission during Panchayat Elections

We conduct promotional activities to commemorate World Amateur Radio Day and many others

About Us

West Bengal Radio Club (Amateur Club) is a non profitable organization founded by Mr. Ambarish Nag Biswas, VU2JFA. The organization was established in year 2010 with club station call sign VU2MQT at Sodepur High School (H.S) , Station Road, Sodepur, Kolkata – 700 110,West Bengal, India. The club conducts regular activities for promotion of Amateur (HAM) Radio communication in the state of West Bengal with true support of Dr. Sudip Chowdhury, Headmaster of Sodepur High School (H.S.) and National Institute of Amateur Radio (NIAR), Hyderabad.

What is HAM Radio?

Amateur (HAM) radio, often called ham radio, is both a hobby and a service in which participants, called "hams," use various types of radio communications equipment to communicate with other radio amateurs for public services, recreation and self-training.

Amateur (HAM) radio operators enjoy personal (and often worldwide) wireless communications with each other and are able to support their communities with emergency and disaster communications if necessary, while increasing their personal knowledge of electronics and radio theory. An estimated three million people throughout the world are regularly involved with amateur (HAM) radio. Amateur (HAM) radio operators use various modes of transmission to communicate. Voice transmissions are most common, with some, such as frequency modulation (FM) offering high quality audio, and others, such as single sideband (SSB) offering more reliable communications, often over long distance, when signals are marginal and bandwidth is restricted, without sacrificing audio quality. Over the past century amateur (HAM) radio operators have contributed to ourunderstanding of radio communications, devised entirely new radio communication technologies, combined pre-existing technologies in innovative new ways, and developed operational procedures that have largely defined the way in which communication by radio is carried out. Amateur (HAM) radio has played a fundamental role in the development of radio and telecommunications technology, and it continues to do so today. The user community at these locations will be empowered with technical skills on a continuous basis and will become a knowledge and information resource centre for served organizations. The radio amateurs in the country will also have an opportunity to utilize these services for their communication requirements as well as emergency communication use.

Awareness on the use of amateur (HAM) radio communications will contribute to human resource development in the area. The Ham volunteers contributing to this project will be trained technically and equipped with adequate support to be available for most disaster mitigation and management activities in the region.
